Biography
Early Life
Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide from Midianite raiders when an angel called him a mighty warrior. He protested his insignificance and asked for signs.
Defining Biblical Moments
Gideon tore down his father's altar to Baal, tested God with the fleece, and then led 300 men with trumpets, jars and torches to rout the Midianites. After victory he refused kingship but later made an ephod that became a snare.
Strengths
Gideon shows that God can use hesitant people; his careful seeking of confirmation reflects a desire to be sure of God's call.
Weaknesses & Lessons
His later creation of a golden ephod and his large household led to idolatry and family tragedy, warning that good beginnings require faithful endings.
Life Lessons for Today
Courage does not require absence of doubt, but it does require obedience once direction is clear; initial victory must be followed by sustained faithfulness.
