Biography
Early Life
Martha lived in Bethany with her siblings Mary and Lazarus and often hosted Jesus and his disciples.
Defining Biblical Moments
Martha welcomed Jesus, was gently rebuked for anxious serving while Mary listened, and later made a clear confession: "I believe that thou art the Christ." At Lazarus' tomb she trusted Jesus' word, and she served at a supper where Mary anointed Jesus.
Strengths
Martha is portrayed as hospitable, responsible, and capable of strong, articulate faith under grief.
Weaknesses & Lessons
Her distraction and worry show how good service can become anxious when not anchored in listening to Jesus.
Life Lessons for Today
Service and contemplation belong together; honest questions brought to Jesus can grow into confident faith.
