Biography

Early Life

Nehemiah served as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in Susa. When he heard Jerusalem's walls were broken down, he fasted, prayed and asked the king for leave to rebuild.

Defining Biblical Moments

Nehemiah surveyed the ruins by night, organized families to rebuild sections of the wall despite opposition from Sanballat and Tobiah, and completed the work in 52 days. He then worked with Ezra to renew covenant obedience and address social injustices.

Strengths

Nehemiah is portrayed as prayerful, strategically organized, resilient under opposition, and concerned for justice and covenant renewal.

Weaknesses & Lessons

His later reforms required strong confrontation, showing that rebuilding physical structures must be matched by ongoing moral and communal reform.

Life Lessons for Today

Prayer and planning belong together; leadership involves both inspiring collective action and addressing internal inequities.
